Garden House Concert: Trio Guadalevín
What are the stories carried in a wandering melody played out by strings? Whose are the hands that have played this contagious rhythm long before? Named for the ancient river and gorge that divides the city of Rhonda in Andalusia, Trio Guadalevín explores the deep roots that bind the Americas with Southern Europe, the Maghreb and West Africa roots that stretch across the ocean and intermingle Indigenous, African, Arabic and European cultural expressions. Drawing on Mexican son jarocho and huasteco, melodies sung in Zapotec, Spanish xácaras, Italian ciaccona, Andalusian song, Sephardic balladry and Moroccan shabia Abel Rocha, August Denhard and Antonio Gómez interpret and often re-imagine a soundscape that draws on the many facets of identity that link Latin America and the Mediterranean.
Abel Rocha Harp, jarana, guitar, quinta, voice
August Denhard Lute, Baroque guitar, therobo, oud
Antonio Gómez Pandereta, bendir, teponatzli, cajón, zils, cascabeles, rattles
