DEATHTRAP - WALTERBORO
Locally owned Coastal Stage Production's second season opens with Deathtrap, Broadway's longest-running thriller by Ira Levin. Directed by Henry Dreier and performed entirely by local talent, Deathtrap is a suspenseful treat filled with greed, deceit, murder and shocking plot-twists!
Thriller playwright Sydney Bruhl (Roscoe Sandlin) has found himself in a creative slump. His hit plays are long behind him, hidden under a series of recent flops. His debts are growing and he is in desperate need of a success. When a former seminar student named Clifford Anderson (Rodney Vaughn) sends him an exclusive copy of his first play, entitled Deathtrap, Bruhl simmers with jealousy over his former pupil's talent. The play is destined to be a hit, and Bruhl is so far the only other person to lay eyes on it. Somehow, he must cleverly get rid of the original author and claim Deathtrap as his own.
Bruhl's wealthy and emotionally supportive wife Myra (Christine Grefe), is reasonable and predictably cautious of the evening's planned events. Bruhl lays out his masterplan and further troubles Myra as he begins to describe his intentions. "They say that committing murder on paper siphons off the urges, but I'm not sure that's true," he devilishly states, as he calmly caresses the curve of a knife blade. What follows next is a roller coaster ride of cleverly played twists and turns. It quickly becomes clear that this evening will not end as planned.
Bluffton resident and returning Coastal Player, Donna Capps, brings humor and zest to the plot as Helga Ten Dorp, an imposing, clairvoyant neighbor who senses imminent danger. Her overzealous and enthusiastic promotion of her recent book tour is gravely overshadowed by her immense fear for the survival of the murder-plotting members of the Bruhl household.
Rounding out the cast and making his local theatre debut, Chris Donelson portrays Porter Milgrim, the seemingly supportive, yet cunningly opportunistic confidant and legal advisor to Sydney & Myra. With his own revelations, it seems that numbers aren't the only thing that Milgrim needs to fulfill his clever, yet devious plans for personal success.
From the author of The Stepford Wives and Rosemary's Baby, the Tony Award nominated, Deathtrap is widely considered one of the best stage thrillers of all time. Twisting and turning with fiendish artistry, it will keep you on the edge of your seat until the shocking end. If you are a fan of suspense and a supporter of community theatre, then don't miss this brilliant performance of Deathtrap.
