Primary
"Primary" is a new 1-act ballet produced by Tiffany Lawson Dance. In it, we see the emotional progression of the human condition as told through the backdrop of primary colors and the emotions commonly associated with each color. Chicago artist Jen Downing provided the paintings that give us a visual starting point of this progression while the music, an original wind septet, composed by Scott Hargis and choreography by Tiffany Lawson and Shayna Bjerke tell the story that brings the paintings to life! In "Yellow", the first scene, we see a canary bird flying over a field of sunflowers as the sun rises. The piece follows the adventures of the sun, canary, and sunflowers in a whimsical scene that shows the fun and happiness associated with the color yellow. Towards the end of the scene we see "the Lady" as she makes her way through the field enjoying the revelry of the living creatures that she witnesses. As the sun sets towards dusk, the Lady makes her way to the sea where the mood settles into one of contemplation, melancholy and sadness. "Blue" shows an eye with tears falling into the sea. Each tear represents an event in the life of the Lady as we gain an insight into 3 episodes that bring these feelings out in the Lady. After reflection on these events, the Lady makes her way into the woods and starts a fire. The fire shows the emotional journey from the melancholy of "Blue" into the anger and passion associated with "Red". As the fire grows we see the Spirits of the Flame come out to entice the Lady with its fierce emotions. These Spirits dance with the Lady and help to bring about her transformation into another Spirit of the Flame.
"Primary" is set to debut March, 17-20, 2016 at the Tom Robinson Gallery in Chicago, IL.
