The Wayout is an instrumental (most of the time) modern American music band hailing from Rhode Island. They specialize in making eclectic music based on original compositions and spontaneous improvisation. The group started as the brainchild of pianist Tom White, who recorded his debut album Portrait of a Blue Man with most of The Wayout's current members. After the recording session, Tom White and guitarist Alex Curnow then headed a collaborative project consisting of their original works. Their music was well-received by audiences in late 2010 and throughout 2011. The Wayout is the current manifestation of this collaborative effort.
All four members are schooled musicians in both a real-world and an academic sense. All the members have studied with some of New England's most prominent jazz musicians, whose accomplishments range from Grammy nominations to Jazz Album of the Year recognition. The members of the group have been playing music together for several years in various combos at jam sessions, recitals, concerts, and working gigs within and outside the University of Rhode Island. This great deal of internal rapport and familiarity allows for adventurous interplay and dialogue when the band is in an improvisatory mindset, and makes for an incredible sensibility within composed sections of music. For the audience, this means fresh and engaging music.
The group aims to provide a unique live experience to audience members and all lovers of bands focused on the performance of live improvised music.
