The Watah Theatre welcomes the community to WANAWAKE: Black Womxn ARTrepreneur a celebration of the brilliant entrepreneurial spirit of Black Womxn on International Womxns Day.
On March 8th, 2016 the Watah Theatre with host a full day of events in the spirit of creating alternative economics amongst Black womxn artrepreneurs. Are you a Black womxn artrepreneur? Are you combining your artistic gifts with your genius mind to create life-sustaining business models that sustain you and your family? If so, we would love to invite you to be a very special participant in WANAWAKE!
WANAWAKE is a Swahili word meaning WOMXN! We would like you to be featured in our International Womxns Day event while being celebrated for what you contribute to the society through your tenacity, courage, positivity and love. WANAWAKE promises to be a day celebrating love as a means of growing and healing. A day to shine in our radiant Blackness. A day to live our urgencies through sharing our art while reaching far beyond art into an infinite of possibilities to be defined by us. WANAWAKE is an opportunity to network and to explore diverse businesses developed by Black womxn. At Watah Theatre, our focus on love as a means of growing and healing is a priority.
WANAWAKE will take place from 10am-4pm on March 8th, 2016. We are in the process of confirming our keynote speaker.
WANAWAKE will have: a marketplace for tabling of artists work to share and to sell panel discussions throughout the day storytellers and performers healing arts workshops tarot readings food burlesque film screening headwrapping workshop fashion designers keynote address and so much more...
For your participation, you will receive: a guest pass for the day-long event two free tickets to the opening night of Oughtism by Faduma Mohamed (opening at 7pm March 8th in the DanceMakers Theatre a wholesome healthy lunch and fruits throughout the day the opportunity to network throughout the day the opportunity to present on a panel or give a workshop the opportunity to have a table at WANAWAKE the opportunity to be a part of an ongoing network of Black Womxn Businesses (listed on the website as well as in the resource book)
We are hoping that you will join us in this new adventure. Please reply to artisticdirector@watah.org to RSVP by MONDAY FEBRUARY 15 your attendance and participation. In your response please cut and paste the statements that apply to you.

About The Watah Theatre: The Watah Theatre previously anitafrika dub theatre, is a performing arts company that specializes in the wholistic development and mentorship of primarily Black identified artists and also welcomes artists who are People of Colour, First Nations and or LGBTQQIP2SAA. Founded in 2008 and incorporated in 2014 as a non-profit by dbi.young anitafrika, the organization cultivates artists as mentor-leaders of integrity. Past Watah Theatre alumni include CBCs Amanda Parris, Stratfords Bahia Watson, Manifestos Che Kothari and RISE Edutainments Randell Adjei.
About dbi.young anitafrika: YWCA 2015 Woman of Distinction in the Arts, dbi.young anitafrika, is the creator of the human development framework called The Sorplusi Method. Her art explores themes of identity, gender, sexuality, class and the human experience. anitafrika is a Canadian Poet of Honour recently featured as a Top Ten Poet on CNN, awarded a Vital People accolade by Toronto Community Foundation and a fellowship in the TAC-Banff Cultural Leaders Lab, for her tireless commitment to social development. She is also a recipient of two Dora Awards, a KM Hunter theatre award, and a Mayors Arts Award. anitafrika has worked and lectured extensively internationally, including a recent address at the United Nations. anitafrika is the Founder & Artistic Director of Canadas Watah Theatre and Sorplusi Institute, where she teaches the Sorplusi Method as a transformative tool to over twenty-six artists-in-residence. Look out for her new plays Esu Crossing The Middle Passage, She, Mami Wata & The Pussy WitchHunt & Bleeders, premiering in Toronto in Spring 2016.
