Roxana Vilk is a British-Iranian writer, singer and film-maker. Her work reaches out from her home in East Lothian to such far-flung destinations as Bosnia, Norway, Lebanon and beyond. Roxana's work brings CoastWord an evening that connects five of her short films with related stories from Qisetna: Talking Syria, a bilingual blog highlighting the stories of Syrians around the world. These short but powerful films are snapshots of life and culture in Iraq, Iran and Syria.
After each film, Roxana will link to stories from the Qisetna blog, by finding connecting themes or a counterpoint to her own ideas. The result is a fascinating look at the Middle East today, and a celebration of the individual voices, especially of women. In the second half of the evening, Roxana will be joined by members of her band, GOL. Hosted by CoastWord and East Lothian Welcomes Refugees, all profits from this evening will be shared between Dunbar Helps Syrians and the Scottish Refugee Council.
"Gol are a utterly unique proposition, there's musical elements of Persia, dub, jazz, funk and North Africa that combine so well it's testament to the skill of the band's members and the music itself. Most importantly though, GOL have a groove that anyone can lock into." - Chris Knight, Astrojazz
"One of the most exciting and eclectic bands at this year's Festival. A cosmopolitan workout for mind and feet!" - The Scotsman
