Words to the Beat featuring Liz Lochhead and Withered Hand
Words to the Beat has been a shining star of our last two festivals and we are so excited to bring it back! True to form, the evening boasts a truly stellar line up and promises to be an unmissable mix of music, poetry and storytelling. This year we feature Edinburgh-based folk-rock troubadour, Withered Hand, Scotland's makar and recipient of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, Liz Lochhead, Tenement & Temple, otherwise known as Monica Queen and Johnny Smillie, singing special selections from the Great American Songbook, dynamic poet and co-founder of Neu! Reekie!, Michael Pedersen and one half of Rally & Broad, BBC Radio Scotland poet and CoastWord Writer in Residence for 2015/16, Rachel McCrum.
"Liz Lochhead has made a unique contribution to Scottish poetry. Since the early 1970s she has influenced an entire generation of other writers, bringing a new kind of poetry performance to the stage, as well as a different set of rhythms to the page." - Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate
"Thank heavens for Withered Hand enlightening, wry and devastating, but most of all... life-affirming." - Nicola Meighan, The Quietus
