Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio! Comedy Returns to El Rio is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig. It features an eclectic, multicultural mix of intelligent, progressive, straight, LGBT, and everything in between comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. The show has been taking place for the past 6-1/2 years at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District.
This month features Marga Gomez, Loren Kraut, David Lawrence Hawkins, Sabeen Sadiq, and Lisa Geduldig.
Marga Gomez was named "Best Bay Area Comedian" by the SF Weekly, Bay Area Reporter, and The San Francisco Bay Guardian. Marga has been featured on HBO, LOGO, Showtime, Comedy Central, PBS, and has appeared at numerous comedy festivals including SF Sketchfest, Montreal's "Just For Laughs," and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival." Being half Cuban, she spends her time apologizing for Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. She is also the author/performer of eleven solo plays. The SF Weekly recently named her a "2016 Artist To Watch." Her 2015 solo comedy, "POUND," premiered at New York City's Dixon Place to rave reviews and played at San Francisco's Brava Studio Theater for an extended sold out 6-week run. She was recently featured on the KGO TV special "Profiles of Excellence" for her Bay Area artistic contributions and her community involvement. Marga is an artist-in-residence at Brava Theater, where she teaches solo performance and curates Brava's New Year's Eve Comedy Fiesta. For information, visit http://www.margagomez.com
Loren Kraut is awkwardly hilarious. Her unorthodox style of comedy juxtaposes playfulness with deeply dark humor. She turns grim subject matter, like depression and suicide, on its ear, presenting the bleakness of mental illness with unexpected wit and levity. Ever the outsider, Loren gives us a glimpse into her weird, silly and often tragic world that, in the end, is surprisingly life affirming. Loren has performed at the Punch Line in SF and Sacramento, and SF Sketchfest for the past 4 years. She was a finalist in the Killer Laughs Comedy Competition 2014 and a finalist in the Battle of the Bay Comedy Competition 2007 and 2009. She also produced & co-hosted "Life with Laughter" a monthly variety showcase.
David Lawrence Hawkins has been performing stand up for 8 years appearing at venues such as the SF Punchline, The Comedy Store, and the National Queer Arts Festival. He is also an artist whose paintings will be on display at the Glamarama Salon in San Francisco for a month beginning Easter weekend. You can read all about his adventures as an avid thriftshopper in his Tumblr blog Gimme Thrift! gimmethrift.tumblr.com He has recently started using his middle name again because it makes him feel smarter.
Sabeen Sadiq is a Pakistani-American comedian hailing from Chicago and based in San Francisco. She performs in several Bay Area comedy clubs including Cobb's and the San Jose Improv. Audience members get a front row seat into the dysfunctions of Sabeen's quirky midwestern family and of her frizzy unkempt hair. She also co-produces the show, Stand up ShowDown, in the Bay Area. When she's not telling jokes, you can find her at her apartment doing nothing.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer who's the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (now in its 24th year); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
