Evening @ the Barn: The World of Vernon & Irene Castle
Historian Miles Kreuger, President of the Institute of the American Musical, will give a presentation on the lives and careers of famed husband and wife dance team, Vernon and Irene Castle. Together, they ignited the ballroom dancing craze in the early 20th century. Irene's elegant, youthful style influenced American women and helped the Castles become among the first modern celebrities.
After Vernon's untimely death in 1918, Irene had a career in film and vaudeville and was advisor to the 1939 movie "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle". The evening will include a screening of the rare, silent film The Whirl of Life (1915), featuring live piano accompaniment by Frederick Hodges.
In addition, we will have a display of rare memorabilia related to their careers. As always we'll have our famous $1 raffle, the proceeds of which go to support our acquisitions fund. Refreshments will be available on our back deck before the show and during intermission. See you at the barn!
