FIRST FRIDAY @ GALERIA WEST Music Series with MAURICIO de SOUZA & BOSSA BRASIL
The popular FIRST FRIDAY @ GALERIA WEST Music Series concerts continue at the intimate Galeria West Art Gallery, located at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 7pm with an evening of exciting Brazilian Samba & More music with acclaimed Brazilian percussionist MAURICIO de SOUZA and the BOSSA BRASIL music ensemble in concert. This once a month live concert event continues to bring to you a unique opportunity to enjoy a diversity of music genres as performed by a select series of international artists. Born in Brasília, Brazil, Maurício de Souza is a drummer who easily performs in both traditional jazz and Brazilian jazz styles. His good taste and finesse have allowed him to play in numerous settings with various accomplished musicians. Maurício studied with world renowned jazz drummer and master teacher, Joe Morello for eight years. He also had a year of private studies with distinguished all-round percussion teacher Glenn Weber. Aside from the inspiration of Mr. Morello, other influential performers include Buddy Rich, Airto Moreira, Dave Weckl, Roy Haynes, and Bill Stewart. Internationally, Maurício has performed in Brasília, Brazil with his quartet/quintet at Gate's Pub, Velvet Pub, Restaurante Feitiço Mineiro, Schlob Bar e Restaurante, C'Est Si Bon, and Jazz Cafe. Other performances include appearances as a guest percussionist in numerous local orchestral concerts with the Bergen Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro de Brasília (Brazil). De Souza's group, Bossa Brasil, performs the most sophisticated Brazilian music. The repertoire includes compositions from Brazil's most outstanding artists such as Tom Jobim, Egberto Gismonti, Roberto Menescal, Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Victor Assis Brasil, Hermeto Pascoal, Baden Powell, and Pixinguinha. Some of the even more exotic rhythms explored by the group include the "Baião", the "Chorinho" and the ever popular Brazilian "Samba". Esteemed performers Tatiana Lima (vocals), Ben Winkelman (piano) and Karl Kaminski (bass), contribute highly to the authentic and original sound of the group. We encourage you to join us often during the year at a First Friday @ Galeria West concert to celebrate the arts in a unique setting. We recommend that you consider enjoying a fine meal before or after the concert at one of many fine restaurants in quaint downtown Westfield and the surrounding area. Most are located within a short walk from the gallery. Event proceeds benefit theatrical programming efforts at TEATRO Si, a 501(c) 3 New Jersey not for profit corporation.
