The Sisters Rosensweig
The "Sisters Rosensweig" by Wendy Wasserstein is a romantic comedy set in August of '91 as the Soviet Union is dissolving. It is the story of three middle age Jewish women and their relationships to each other and to the men in their lives.  The show opens with the celebration of the oldest sister Sara Goode's birthday.  Her two sisters, Pfeni Rosensweig and "Dr." Gorgeous Teitelbaum, come to England to join her.  Also invited are Sara's teenage daughter, Tessie; Pfeni's lover, the bisexual play director, Geoffrey Duncan; Sara's aristocratic lover, Nicholas Pym; and Tessie's working-class Catholic boyfriend, Tom.

The play follows the structure of Chekhov's famous play Tri sestry (1901; Three Sisters,'20). The birthday gifts given are eccentric or inappropriate. Both plays take place not long after the death of a parent who has set goals for the sisters' lives (the father in Chekhov's play and the mother in Wasserstein's.) Like Chekhov's play, moreover, Wasserstein's drama is built on a series of arrivals and departures, fanciful monologues, rambling retrospectives, unlikely relationships gone awry, and absurd mishaps occurring at moments of tension. The play captures the Chekhovian view of a society on the brink of change and depicts a group of insecure people who are desperately trying to find a moment of happiness in a world that is falling down around them.

Wasserstein had created what she felt was her most serious play. So she was surprised when the audience burst into fits of good-natured laughter. The playwright had thought she had written an "important" play about family tensions, social pressures and expectations, and the historical events that go on around us when we scarcely pay attention.  All of that is in the play. So, why were people laughing? Because the themes are in the subtext, but the humorous moments (generated by Wasserstein's witty, strong-willed characters) are blatant.
