Introduction to Beekeeping: Everything you Wanted to Know about Bee Hive Construction Without Reading a Book
January and February may be a relatively quiet time for the bees, but the early Winter is a crucial time in the beekeeper's year. This is the time that is typically dedicated to the assessment and maintenance of woodenware. Don't get caught this Spring without equipment! This workshop has limited seating because we'll need lots of building space, so register now!
In this hands-on workshop, Bay Area beekeeper Alice Rosenthal will help novice and experienced beekeepers alike navigate the myriad choices we have for hive equipment, including a discussion about the types of hives we use today. We will focus on the components and options for Langstroth hives, including hive assembly, wiring, wax foundation installation, plastic foundation, inner covers, and top and bottom boards. Students can practice their building skills with our equipment and supplies, or prepare for swarm season by building and wiring their own 5 frames with beeswax foundation to make a portable nuc box swarm trap to take home. Alice will also have her very effective swarm lure for sale.
Instructor Bio: Alameda County Beekeepers Association Member Alice Rosenthal runs Bee Happy Solutions, a Bay Area bee service that provides extractions, swarm collection, honey and swarm lure. She manages in excess of 150 hives throughout the Bay Area, and teaches and mentors beekeepers both young and old.
