About the quartet:
The Varian Fry Quartett comprises four members of the Berliner Philharmoniker, three of whom played together while studying at the orchestra's Academy in 2007. The quartet, which gave its first public performance at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden, Germany, in 2013, grew out of the musicians' desire to play in a permanent ensemble.
Varian Mackey Fry (October 15, 1907 September 13, 1967) was an American journalist. He ran a rescue network in Vichy France that helped over 2,000 anti-Nazi and Jewish refugees to escape Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, among them being Lion and Marta Feuchtwanger.
