On February 18th, TMI Project will host a post-Valentine's Day story slam celebrating humans' crazy relationships with cats, dogs and other pets as part of its popular T.M.I.dol story slam series.
The slam will be held at 7:30pm at BSP Lounge, a nightclub in the historic Stockade district, and will be emceed by comic, performer and TMI Project co-founder Julie Novak (who is also one of two moms to canines Jackson and Archie).
There are few loves as fierce as the love between a pet and its humans. These adorable creatures figure prominently in our lives, which is why they're often the subject of conversation, social media postings, and the most popular videos online. They giveand takeso much. Sometimes they're incredibly smart, other times, incredibly silly. They're innocent and sweet, but also trying and needy. Sometimes they'll seem very human likeand then they'll do something to remind you that they are full-on beasts.
"We picked this topic because we noticed, time and time again, that once people start talking about their pets, it's hard to change the subject," said TMI Project co-founder and Executive Director Eva Tenuto. "We're passionate about our animals and I think sharing these stories is an appropriate and fun way to celebrate the season of love."
"I am head over paws for my little guy," Novak admits. "I am constantly amazed by how easy it is to overlook all the disgusting things Archie does (eating poo, mulch, frozen frogs, etc.) every time I look at his impossibly cute, muppet-like face."
Those who'd like to compete in the slam by telling a five-minute story should sign up by January 31st at info@tmiproject.org. The first ten to sign up will be included.
Tickets are $10 in advance via Brown Paper Tickets, and $15 at the door on the day of the event.
T.M.I.dol is TMI Project's popular story slam series (think TMI meets American Idol), in which readers compete by telling short, true stories from their own experiences, on a particular theme. Readers are given guidelines for creating a story, but unlike with the monologues produced for our stage shows, we do not do any work on these, nor even see the stories beforehand.
TMI Project is a non-profit organization founded by executive director Eva Tenuto and Novak, which offers memoir writing workshops that culminate in performances and/or publication. Through its Community Outreach Initiative, TMI Project brings distinct versions of its workshops to the incarcerated, at-risk teens, cancer patients, survivors of domestic violence, military veterans, LBGTQ teens, and other populations where people don't often get to tell their stories or be heard.
BSP Kingston is located at 323 Wall Street in Uptown Kingston, NY, 12401. For more information or to purchase tickets in advance go to tmiproject.org.
