Brahms Sextets at Skywalker Sound
From April 26 through April 30 of 2016 the Cypress String Quartet will record Brahms' two sextets at Skywalker Sound, with collaborators Zuill Bailey and Barry Shiffman. These will be live studio recordings designed to capture the energy, emotion, and personality of golden age recordings from the mid-twentieth century. The CSQ will perform in front of a live studio audience using a combination of the very best vintage and contemporary recording equipment and techniques.
Master audio engineers Leslie Ann Jones and Mark Willsher (bios below) will engineer the recording and also work with us to create an educational program for student participants. The educational program will be tailored for aspiring performers, audio technicians, and generalized students and designed to illustrate how great performance, engineering, and acoustical space can combine to create a transformative listening experience.
Outline of Sponsor day dedicated to our program sponsors- can include up to 30 guests:
11:00 - 11:30: Brief discussion of the history of recorded music, recording techniques, and live recording
11:30-12:30: Brahms Sextet No. 1 performance with discussion and self-assessment from musicians. Half of the guests listen in the recording booth and the other half will listen in the live room.
12:30 - 1:45: Intermission with lunch. Tour Skywalker post-production facilities where possible.
1:45 - 2:30: Brahms Sextet No. 2 performance with discussion and self-assessment from musicians. Groups swap listening locations so everyone has the opportunity to hear both the live and recorded sound.
2:30 - 3:00: Q&A with audio engineers and performers
