The Étude Sessions Presents: Reina Del Cid
On Friday, March 18th, 2016, The Étude Sessions will welcome Reina Del Cid to Paradigm Coffee and Music.
REINA DEL CID
"Going beyond the pale as well as the veil, Del Cid and company are entertainers that know how to tease and please you with one head fake after another. Singer/songwriter? Rockers? Whatever? A little of everything, sometimes in the same song. This is a real shining star on the horizon." Midwest Record
"Tiny Desk alumna Valerie June counted this lush, emotional performance among her favorites. 'It was creative and told a great story, and the arrangement was awesome . . . I want something that makes me feel something, and I felt something when I listened to The Cooling I felt moved.'" Bob Boilen, NPR
"Faced with the question of influences, REINA DEL CID cites literary rather than musical heroes. She commands a flexibility of language reminiscent less of Regina Spektor or Ingrid Michaelson, artists she is often compared to, but more of Virginia Woolf or Sylvia Plath. Yet there is a Newtonian balance of forces in Reina del Cid's band: for every droll phrase or inventive image pushing the music toward the realm of the cerebral, there is a corresponding musical contribution from the richly talented Toni Lindgren. The young guitarist is adept at orchestrating and fleshing out the skeletons of del Cid's songs into an engaging brand of pop rock, equal parts stratified and accessible. These lyrical and musical forces have never combined more compellingly than in the band's sophomore album, The Cooling." -reinadelcid.com
THE ÉTUDE SESSIONS Proceeds from The Étude Sessions ensure transformative experiences for students in the arts and academics such as college readiness initiatives, international travel, and artist in residence programs, that would not otherwise be available to public school students. During the 2014-2015 season a portion of the funds helped send students on a service-learning trip to Nicaragua in June. Students envisioned their professional lives beyond high school through participation in creative writing festivals, dance workshops, and engineering in the community experiences. They also visited eight different colleges in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Madison. The intention The Étude Sessions is to make these experiences accessible to all students in the Étude schools, 80% of whom are first generation college students and over 50% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The Étude Sessions is the brainchild of Troy Tousey, founder of Open Mind Studios of Sheboygan, Wis. Troy, an avid community supporter and passionate live music fan, hosted house concerts in his backyard and attended hundreds of live performances during his years at Northwestern University, and while living in Colorado and Sheboygan. Troy was vice president of The Étude Group Governing Board, part of the Sheboygan Area School District, at the time of his death in June of 2012. Troy dreamed of presenting music like PHOX to Sheboygan to benefit the community, the music, and The Étude Group schools.
Sponsorship Supporters of The Étude Sessions now have a unique opportunity to become sponsors.
