Event
The Lightning Train
When Margaret West inquires about shipping two crates by train to Philadelphia, the freight agent, Thomas Ferry, suspects that she is trying to aid fugitive slaves. Ferry approaches a client of the railroad, William Whipper, a lumber merchant, to see what he might know about West's plans. Ferry begins to consider the role that the Reading Railroad might play in moving fugitives, while Whipper and his employee, Charley Mathews, devise even more ambitious plans to aid their escape. Whipper's plans encounter resistance from his wife, who fears more violence directed at her family. When Ferry's assumptions are challenged, he must decide on which side of the line he stands. Followed by discussion with community leaders.
