Craig Russell, lecturer, Terrence Spiller and Susan Davies piano duo
Presentation on Beethoven's sketches for the Eroica Symphony drafts arranged by Craig Russell. "I have arranged" the cursory sketches of Beethoven that he scribbled down in the Landsberg 6 sketchbook in which he is ironing out the problems and issues for his Symphony No. 3 (as it was gestating and taking form) Using his later sketches, we can tell more or less how he was harmonizing even in the early sketches in his imagination. I have fleshed out those sketches into an arrangement for 4-hands on one piano (hence we will be needing Terry and Susan). I will show those in attendance how Beethoven has only rather clumsy ideas initially. He then hones the tunes into shape rather quickly, but then he STRUGGLES with transitions and connective tissue. It fascinates me that it is the "in between" sections that caused him the most compositional dissatisfaction and the feeling that he needed to revise and reshape those over and over.
It should be a fun Beethoven afternoon!
