smARTfilms: Essential European - Wild Strawberries
Wild Strawberries (Sweden, 1957, 91 min) Traveling to accept an honorary degree, Professor Isak Borgmasterfully played by veteran director Victor Sjöströmis forced to face his past, come to terms with his faults, and make peace with the inevitability of his approaching death. Through flashbacks and fantasies, dreams and nightmares, Wild Strawberries dramatizes one man's remarkable voyage of self-discovery. This richly humane masterpiece, full of iconic imagery, is a treasure from the golden age of art-house cinema and one of the films that catapulted Ingmar Bergman to international acclaim. - Criterion Collection
Join us for our newest smARTfilms series, "Essential European." Come see your favorite movies as they are meant to be seen: on the big screen, in comfy chairs, and well fed (see details below)! All screenings are followed by a facilitated discussion.
"Essential European" will be an overview of the landmark European films since the beginning of motion pictures. Cinema has always been an international enterprise with films from other countries mixing in with domestic releases to bring entertainment and information to the movie-going public. While frequently screened at art houses, many foreign films have entered the mainstream and become classics. While BIMA can't cover all the bases in these six weeks, our curators will try to capture a representative view of films that evoke the essence of their countries and provide some historical perspective.
Come early for dinner featuring soup, salad, nightly specials, desserts and sweet treats in the BIMA Bistro. Wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages available. Reservations recommended, call 206-451-4011. Dinner not included in ticket price.
Dinner at 5:30 Auditorium opens at 6:30 Movie starts at 7:00
