LOCATION: Tychman Shapiro Gallery at the Sabes JCC
Autobiographical storytelling and solo monologue have become a hugely popular art form, spawning entire festivals of one-person shows, story slams, and a plethora of podcasts. Learn how to find the rich and revealing stories lurking in your own everyday life and turn them into compelling, connective material for the stage or page in this 3-hour workshop that combines writing, discussing and participatory exercises. We'll focus on the essential building blocks that make up a story, how to create dramatic tension, the interplay of advancing and expanding, and how to capitalize on your unique voice. Bring a notebook and pen or a laptop computer.
Actor/writer/storyteller Amy Salloway is the creator of the award-winning autobiographical solo plays Does This Monologue Make Me Look Fat?, So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz! and Circumference, as well as the two-person show Entwined. She's contributed stories to radio shows on MPR and CBC, and to the national podcast "Risk!", teaches writing and performance classes for conferences, organizations and through Minneapolis Community Ed, and is a regular on just about every spoken-word-inclusive stage in the Twin Cities.
