Willing and Able
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The ADA is a law intended to protect against discrimination based on disability. It affords similar protections against discrimination to Americans with disabilities as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics illegal. Though unlike the Civil Rights Act the ADA extends into the workplace, requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities. At Willing and Able 8 Mainers will provide a small window into how the ADA has affected those whom the law was written to serve but whose voices are often neglected.
