Action/Experiential Methods In Group Psychotherapy
This activity is approved by the New York State Education Department's Board for Social Work to provide 4 contact hours of Continuing Education Action/Experiential Methods, also called Psychodrama, is a form of experiential work that applies role theory and techniques borrowed from the theater to therapeutic goals. Primarily conducted in group settings, action/experiential methods rapidly connect people to one another in ways that promote both psychological safety and an atmosphere of support for emotional exploration. This group series will teach specific techniques that promote group cohesion and discuss their application in the therapeutic group process. The group will experience and learn about the 5 basic instruments of action/experiential work: warm up, role reversal, scene setting, doubling and mirroring, the phases of an experiential group process within a session, and the stages of a group's development.
You will learn: A minimum of 6 effective warm-up techniques that can be used to promote cohesion in treatment groups;
The technique of role-reversal and its applications;
The technique of scene-setting and its applications in action/experiential work in groups;
The technique of doubling and its application in action/experiential work in groups;
The technique of mirroring and its application in action/experiential work in groups;
The stages of an experiential group process;
INSTRUCTOR: Nicholas Wolff, LCSW, BCD, TEP, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Board Certified Diplomate, and Trainer, Educator and Practitioner of Psychodrama and Group Psychotherapy in full-time private practice, providing individual, group, family and marital therapy. He has conducted training in action methods and group psychotherapy for mental health, education, law enforcement, and business professionals for over 35 years, and currently trains addiction counselors, psychotherapists, mental health counselors and educators in experiential methods and group process at Lifestage, Inc. His professional training seminars have covered a full range of social issues, including small and large group process, social and gender roles in cultural context, family therapy, addiction, racism and trauma. He serves on the Suffolk County Trauma Response Team since 1990, and was the Senior Debriefer when the Response Team worked with survivors of the attack on the World Trade Center, and Senior Counselor in assisting the caregivers involved with survivors and rescue workers. He served as President of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama from 2005-2007 after 10 years on the Executive Council.
