NOVA Winter 2016 (Toronto Public Library, Fort York Branch)
The RASC (Royal Astronomical Society of Canada) Toronto Centre runs a program for adults and teenagers who are interested in astronomy. The NOVA program (New Observers to Visual Astronomy) is a 6-week introductory course that is designed to show the novice astronomer the wonders of the night sky and how to enjoy them. No experience or telescope required.
This winter's 2016 NOVA (New Observers to Visual Astronomy) course will be held at the Toronto Public Library, Fort York Branch, 190 Fort York Blvd, Toronto, M5V-0E7, Auditorium and Meeting Room. The course will run from 6:15pm to 8:15pm on the following Tuesday nights in 2016: February 2, 9, 23 and March 1, 8 and 22.
NOVA will be six lessons, as follows:
Week 1: Introduction to RASC and Astronomy, overview of the course, astronomy history and "Canada in Space".
Week 2: Sun, Earth, Moon, tides, eclipses, our Solar System, the Planets, meteor showers, and comets.
Week 3: How to Observe the Solar System, track sunspots, and draw lunar features. Stars (formation, life, end). Constellations. Planispheres. Learning the night Sky. Variable stars.
Week 4: Milky Way. Deep sky objects. Nebulae. Star clusters. Galaxy formation and types of galaxies. How to observe galaxies and galaxy clusters. Astro-sketching. Introduction to Messier and RASC observing programs.
Week 5: Astronomy Gear. Binoculars, telescope types, selection and use, observing logs, equipment, observing sites, more drawing skills, and an introduction to light pollution.
Week 6: Cosmology. Black Holes, Dark Matter. Universe formation. Course wrap up.
Classes will be 90 minutes in length. As weather, skies and volunteers permit, we will also provide telescope and night sky viewing for 60 to 90 minutes after each of the classroom sessions. The location of the course is under severely light polluted skies. Participants are therefore invited to join other RASC observing events outside of the city. Come learn about and explore the night sky with us!
During the course participants will be encouraged to pursue the RASC's Explore the Universe Observing Certificate to gain practical experience in locating and observing astronomical objects.
Class size is limited to 45 participants. Recommended minimum age for participants is 12 years old. Children under 13 years old must be accompanied by an adult during each session.
We look forward to introducing and welcoming you to the wonderful world of astronomy and visual observing.
