Songwriters on Stage
Each month, the Maine Songwriter's Association presents Songwriters on Stage, a showcase of some of the best songwriters Maine has to offer. The show features three seasoned performers and an emerging songwriter to kick the evening off. It's an opportunity for listeners to discover new music or come hear local favorites in one of the best listening rooms in Maine. The January concert features Ellen Tipper, Tim Rice, Ed Desjardins, and emerging songwriter, Joel Dobbins.
Ellen Tipper Just beyond the Camden Hills, Ellen Tipper makes her home in Appleton. As a songwriter, Ellen draws inspiration from her natural surroundings and her many travels around the world. Her beautiful second album "The Juggler" won her critical acclaim. In 2014 and 2010 she was a Kerrville New Folk finalist. Also in 2014, she was a winner of the Wildflower Festival Songwriting Contest.
Tim Rice Coming from a family where music was always being played, it would seem Tim Rice would do nothing but be a musician. However, Tim took the time to be a sport photographer, Speech Pathologist, husband (32 years), father (2 girls), as well as an accomplished singer/songwriter. Take a minute with Tim's songs and you will hear folk, soul, jazz, blues, and even a little rock. After being a studio musician in Los Angeles for 20 years, and being the front man for 'Music of the Spheres' ( With Ron Polito, Hollis Payseur, and the incomparable Joe Jewell), Tim has taken his guitar to the road bringing his beautiful songs and soaring vocals to fans old and new. With his new studio release 'Pillars', performed with Nashville studio greats Danny Parks, Dane Bryant, Jimmy Carter, and Wayne Killius, we get to hear both the studio side of Tim from the CD, and hear the translation to the stage with his riveting and entertaining acoustic stylings. His songs come from life, stories gathered from his journeys around the world, stories of empathy and heart, stories written just for you.
Ed Desjardins Since moving to Maine in 2003 Ed Desjardins has established himself as a singer/songwriter with a deep love and respect for the power of music. Alternating between guitar and piano, Ed is known for tackling meaningful subject matter with thought provoking lyrics that leave few stones unturned along the winding path of the human experience. When not working on and performing his own music, Ed serves as a devoted sideman to other artists where he gets to put his abilities as collaborator and multi - instrumentalist to good use. Ed also owns and operates Lakeside recording Studio in Readfield where he has produced several records for fellow artists.
Joel Dobbins Emerging songwriter and second place winner of the 2015 MSA Songwriter Contest, Joel Dobbins comes from mid-coast Maine and his music is crafted from quiet reflection and influenced by the natural world. Expect to hear references to birds, trees, and other elements of nature that typically contribute to a moral or lamentation that flows over fingerpicked acoustic guitar. Though his music is melancholy at times, a common theme is finding contentment, and even happiness, through change and conflict. Joel hopes his music will serve as a nurse loga soft, nutrient-rich source where listeners can place their own roots and grow from the experience of listening. In this way, the lyrics become less about a particular occasion or story and more about a shared experience.
