What's the relationship between comedy and morality? Is there one? Should there be?

That's the question we'll explore in this talk, which looks at professional humor's role in defining, and defying, society's moral boundaries.

From the satirists of ancient Rome to last night's "Daily Show," comedy has never been shy about taking on the moral issues of its time. In satirizing and illuminating society's hypocricies and immoral behaviors, though, comedians are frequently accused of "crossing the line." Generally, they don't care.
"It's the duty of a comedian to find out where the line is drawn and then step over it." - George Carlin

How do we as a society decide when comedy goes too far? We'll explore this question with clips and commentary examining satire, taboos and censorship, from forbidden farts in Afghanistan to the silencing of a South African puppet, not to mention W.S. Gilbert, W.C. Fields, Steve Martin, the Russian Orthodox Churh, "Charlie Hebdo," Billy Wilder, Monty Python, Supreme Court Justice Felix frankfurter, and two outrageous "Saturday Night Live" sketches written by U.S. Senator Al Franken.

David Misch has been a comic folksinger, stand-up comedian, and screenwriter. he's written, created and/or produced programs for all the major networks and many of the major (and minor) cable outlets, including the multiple-Emmy-nominated "Mork and Mindy," the Emmy-losing "Duckman," the Emmy-ignored "Police Squad!," the Emmy-engorged "Saturday Night Live," and the Emmy-ineligible "The Muppets Take Manhattan."

All proceeds go towards the Vidiots Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the cinematic and media arts in the form of preserving and protecting our collection of over 50,000 rare and classic VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray titles.

Vidiots celebrates cinema and the vitality of independent art through education, archival preservation and accessibility. The Vidiots Foundation connects people to experience evolving media, taking video store culture into the 21st century.
