CARL JUNG'S THEORY OF ARCHETYPES AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO ASTROLOGY -- KATHY BORNINO
Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology. His work has been influential not only in psychiatry but also in philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, literature, religious studies and astrology. This course is about Carl Jung's Theory of Archetypes and its relationship to modern Astrology. Carl Jung understood archetypes as universal, archaic patterns and images that derive from the collective unconscious, a part of the unconscious mind, shared by a society, a people, or all humankind. Archetypes can be deduced from behavior, images, art, myths, religion, or dreams. Jung described archetypal figures (great mother, devil, god, villain, hero, innocent child); and archetypal motifs (the apocalypse, the deluge, the creation). He believed that we get to know ourselves through rediscovery and connection with the symbols of the archetypal world: Jung saw the organization of the heavenly constellations into familiar images as unconscious, introspective perceptions of the collective unconscious. He stated that in difficult cases of psychological diagnosis, "I usually get a horoscope in order to have a further point of view from an entirely different angle."1 According to Jung, "The individual disposition is already a factor in childhood; it is innate, and not acquired in the course of a life." Astrologists believe that the positions of the planets at the time and place of a person's birth correspond to the basic archetypal patterns of the person's life and character, that individual unconscious patterns are left as an "imprint" that can be read on a "birth chart" or "natal horoscope, " In this class we will explore astrological planets as archetypal symbols, and birth charts as a unique "map of our soul" that can illuminate the relationship between our conscious and unconscious mind. We will look at the horoscopes of two famous people to better understand how these energies show up in personality and behavior of these people. If you have your own natal horoscope, you can also apply the understanding of what you learn in this class. This may help you understand yourself and your relationships in a different and effective way.
