TAMING THE SAMURAI; THE EXTRAORDINARY POLICIES OF TOKUGAWA REGIME IN JAPAN, 1600-1868 -- PROF. JOHN MCKINSTRY
What is the history of the Samurai? How did this social order come to pass? . The samurai followed a set of rules that later came to be known as the bushidÅ. From childhood, the Samurai were trained to have self-discipline and a sense of duty, together with contempt for material goods and for fear, pain and especially death. Professor John McKinstry will quickly cover five centuries of Samurai history from their rise in the 12th century. Then you will learn in depth about the Tokugawa Shogunate, a highly effective regime that reigned in the samurai wars and produced a pre-modern complex social order with unique and effective policies that preserved peace for 260 years. Dr. Mckinstry is Professor of sociology and Asian Studies at Cal Poly 1968-2014. He is the recipient of three teaching Fulbright awards. He was at universities in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Harbin and Sofia, Bulgaria. And is the author and co-author of several books about Asian societies.
