Anthropomorphic Insect Shadowbox Workshop: Valentine Day's Special, with Daisy Tainton, formerly Senior Insect Preparator at the American Museum of Natural History
Date: Sunday, February 14th Time: 1 4 PM Admission: $75 Location: The Morbid Anatomy Museum : 424A 3rd Ave Corner of 7th St, Brooklyn, NY 11215
Today, join former AMNH Senior Insect Preparator Daisy Tainton for Morbid Anatomy's popular Anthropomorphic Insect Shadowbox Workshop.
Rhinoceros beetles: nature's tiny giants. Adorable, with their giant heads and tiny legs, and wonderful antler-like protrusions. If you think they would be even more adorable drinking tiny beers and holding tiny fishing poles, we have the perfect class for you! In today's workshop, students will learn to makeand leave with their own!shadowbox dioramas featuring carefully positioned beetles doing nearly anything you can imagine.
Xylotrupes gideon beetles will be available, one per student. They measure about 3 tall when standing vertically.
A RANDOM assortment of shadow boxes, miniature furniture, and foods will be made available to create your habitat, but students are strongly encouraged to bring any dollhouse props or special shadow boxes they would like to use.
Dollhouse 1:18 scale is generally best.
Daisy Tainton was formerly Senior Insect Preparator at the American Museum of Natural History, currently works in the Invertebrate Zoology Department and has been working with insects professionally for several years. She has been featured on the hit TV show "Oddities," and has had her work displayed at La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles, California. Eventually her fascination with insects and love of Japanese miniature food items naturally came together, resulting in cute and ridiculous museum-inspired yet utterly unrealistic dioramas. Beetles at the dentist? Beetles eating pie and knitting sweaters? Even beetles on the toilet? Why not?
