Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedy Returns to El Rio is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig. It features an eclectic, multicultural mix of intelligent, progressive, straight, LGBT, and everything in between comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. The show has been taking place for the past 6 years at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District, where Geduldig began her comedy career in 1989 at the club's then weekly show.
This month accidentally features all women: award-winning Shazia Mirza from London, doctor-by-day Priyanka Wali, Emily Epstein White, Irene Tu, and Lisa Geduldig.
Shazia Mirza is a British award-winning comedian and columnist who was raised in a strict Muslim environment. Born and educated in Birmingham, England, she is the daughter of first-generation Pakistani immigrants and is a trained biochemist. Shazia reluctantly pursued a career as a science teacher while secretly honing her writing, acting, and comedy skills part time at an acting school and with late-night gigs across the UK. Shazia performs sold-out shows all over the world including such hot spots as Dubai, Kosovo, Pakistan, and Texas (but San Francisco is her favorite place in the whole world to perform). She has appeared on 60 Minutes, has been featured in The New York Times, on Last Comic Standing, and on the BBC's Have I Got News For You. Her hit shows have included The Last Temptation of Shazia Mirza and Portrait of Shazia Mirza. Her new show, The Kardashians Made Me Do It, a searing and urgent exploration of life, love and Jihadi brides, just had a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in London and will be going on tour. Other credits we in the US won't understand include: Muslim Driving School (Voiceover BBC2 2010), Beautiful People (BBC2 2009), Richard and Judy (Channel 4 roving reporter 2007), 28 Acts in 28 Minutes (BBC3 2005), and The Wright Stuff regular panelist 2011 to present. In 2008, Shazia was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy and won The GG2 Young Achiever of the Year Award. As a writer Shazia formerly penned a fortnightly column for The New Statesman for which she won 'Columnist of the Year 2008' at the prestigious PPA Awards. She has written for the Guardian for many years and then had a weekly column in their Weekend magazine entitled 'Dairy of a Disappointing Daughter'. Also for The Financial Times and the Daily Mail. www.Shazia-Mirza.com
Priyanka Wali, M.D. is a stand-up comedian based in San Francisco. She performs routinely all throughout California, including the Punchline, Cobbs, Yoshi's, and the Purple Onion and has participated in festivals including the Bay Area Hella Gay Comedy Festival and Sedona International Film Festival in Sedona, Arizona. She is also a practicing physician in Internal Medicine in San Francisco. www.priyankawali.com
Emily Epstein White is a comedian and storyteller who has been trapped in a self-cleaning toilet, has stitches from a treadmill accident, and once hung off the front of a truck like a hood ornament for half an avenue to avoid being run over. She performs all around New York City, the Northeast, San Francisco and the Bay area, and the West Coast, (not to mention a boat in the middle of the Yangtze River in China). She has been featured in many festivals and publications such as the 360 Comedy Festival, the She-Devil Comedy Festival, the Boston Globe, and has won the San Francisco MothSlam.
Irene Tu is a stand up comic, writer, and performer from Chicago, now living in the Bay Area. Some have described her as "sarcastic" but she just tells it like it is. She has been in SF Sketchfest, Limestone Comedy Festival, Cape Fear Comedy Festival, She-Devil Comedy Festival, Chicago Women's Funny Festival, and was a finalist in Rooftop Comedy's National College Comedy Competition. She hosts Laugh Function every Saturday 8pm at Pappy's in Berkeley and Hysteria Comedy Open Mic, a women's and queer open mic, every Tuesday at 6pm at Martuni's in SF. www.IreneTu.com
