Spiritus Chamber Choir: Seven Last Words from the Cross
Be awe-struck by the raw power and emotion of Seven Last Words from the Cross by James MacMillan, arguably the Scottish composer's finest musical achievement. Back by popular demand, Spiritus will join a chamber orchestra in performing this haunting piece on the first day of the Christian Holy Week, a fitting meditation on the last words of Christ.
Complementing Seven Last Words is a premiere by Canadian composer Terri Hron entitled BitterSweet: a passion that combines electronics, pre-recorded material by soprano soloists and live choral performance. The piece was inspired by the popular motet by Orlando di Lasso entitled Tristis est anima mea (My soul is sorrowful). BitterSweet is a 'gesture of transformation,' says Hron, 'the tragedy and liberation of never being able to go back.'
