ABOUT THE BOOK
In his 40 years as Mayor of Charleston, Joe Riley has led the historic port city through its greatest period of growth, economic development and unity. His authorized biography, "The Mayor: Joe Riley and the Rise of Charleston," is the inside story of his life and how he built  and forever transformed  one of the nation's oldest cities.

When Joe Riley, Jr. became the Mayor Charleston, King Street had a Waffle Hut and boarded up buildings. How did he envision that Charleston would flourish with Charleston Place as the anchor to an urban re-development program second to none in the world?

How did he build up the waterfront and the Aquarium? What made Riley embrace the Spoleto Festival?

Post and Courier columnist Brian Hicks takes you inside the life of Riley and the rise of Charleston.
