Contract Law Basics for Artists and the Lawyers that Represent Them
Contracts are a necessary part of any business transaction undertaken by artists. In this workshop, Sign Here, Please: Contract Law Basics for Artists and the Lawyers that Represent Them, transactional and art lawyer Alison Ivey will walk you through the basics of contract law including an explanation of fundamental contract terms and an overview of key principals surrounding contract formation and enforcement. The workshop will focus on key contractual provisions of interest to visual* artists, including intellectual property licenses, moral rights waivers, works for hire, and consignment agreements. We will also walk through some representative litigation involving artist contracts as a way of embracing best practices and lessons learned.
*While Alison's experience is primarily with visual art and that will be the focus of this workshop, writers, musicians, thespians, etc. are of course welcome as many of the fundamentals are relevant across all genres!
