From an early age, Eyad, a Palestinian-Israeli boy lives in a world of mixed messages. He goes to an Israeli school but gets clandestine messages about Palestinian nationalism and he and his family root for the Arab side during the region's frequent armed clashes. Given this background, it surprises Eyad when his father is enthusiastically supportive when the young man gets accepted by one of the country's finest private schools, the Jerusalem Arts and Sciences Academy. "It's a chance of a lifetime," his father says, "and an opportunity to show the Israelis you are better than them." Although Eyad gradually learns to fit in at school and say the right things in class, the film's tone darkens as Eyad faces the broader Israeli society, like random identification card checks, that never seem to get easier. Increasingly he is aware of the anti-Arab prejudice in Israel. After falling in love with Naomi, a Jewish girl, he leaves school when their relationship is uncovered, and he discovers that he will have to sacrifice his identity in order to be accepted. Faced with the choice, Eyad will have to make a decision that will change his life forever.
