"ONE FOR MY BABY"...KAREN EGERT sings The Music Of Johnny Mercer thru the Sinatra Years
The date marks the centennial birthday of Frank Sinatra, one of the entertainment world's favorite showman. Along with the select and popular music compositions of Johnny Mercer this special concert celebration promises to be one to remember.
On Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 7:30pm vocalist Karen Egert's "One For My Baby"a musical tribute to two iconic figures, songwriter Johnny Mercer and Frank Sinatra, whose talents grace the history of The Great American Songbook comes to the intimate Galeria West Art & Music Gallery, located at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ.
The show will commemorate Frank Sinatra's 100th birthday as Karen, along with bassist Chris Berger and pianist Matt King takes you through the classic songs of Johnny Mercer that Frank Sinatra recorded. Sinatra's masterful renditions of Mercer's timeless lyrics make this collaboration a perfect pairing. Egert's performance of Johnny Mercer's songs will be integrated with fascinating biographical information and other little known tidbits making for an entertaining music and storytelling show for all.
Karen Egert attended SUNY New Paltz and graduated with BA in Theater Arts. After graduating, she landed a spot as a lead vocalist touring in the Cabaret style show band, Tiffany, performing in major resorts and hotels. After two years performing on the road, she then headed for New York City.
She quickly won a role in the musical revue, The S.P.Q.R. Cabaret on Mulberry St. in Little Italy. While still performing in the S.P.Q.R., Karen landed a principal role-playing "Cher" on Broadway in "Rock And Roll The First 5,000 Years", produced by Dick Clark and directed by Joe Layton at the St. James Theater. Karen then became the lead vocalist and songwriter for The Flirts, a female pop group that had a hit song called "Don't Put another Dime in the Jukebox". She also became their main songwriter and their second big release "Impulse" was one of her original compositions.
Karen had a five-year engagement at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the renowned Peacock Alley Lounge playing on Cole Porter's piano. On one memorable night, Stevie Wonder was in the hotel. As he heard her voice coming through the lobby he came into the Peacock Alley to spend the entire night listening to her perform. Taken by her performance of "Overjoyed" he then concluded the evening with a spontaneous hour long set of his own.
Karen also has the distinction of being written up in two published books on acclaimed jazz singers - " Entertainment: Diva, Cabaret, Jazz, Then and Now: Including Who's Who of the Greatest Female Singers of All Time", by Maximillien J. De Lafayette, and "The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide", by Scott Yanow.
Karen Egert has released two CDs - "Let's Get Lost" and "That Thing Called Love". She has been favorably reviewed by major jazz publications and can be heard on Pandora as well as radio stations around the country. In NYC she has performed at the prestigious Iridium, Danny's Skylight, S.P.Q.R. Cabaret, in addition to Shanghai Jazz in Madison, NJ and Trumpets in Montclair, NJ. She currently can be seen at the legendary lounge at the NEW YORK ATHLETIC CLUB on 58th St and Central Park South in Manhattan.
Bassist Chris Berger has toured and recorded with jazz luminaries Maynard Ferguson, Herb Ellis, Jimmy Cobb and Jeff "Tain"Watts. He has also worked with Hubert Laws, Joe Williams, Russell Malone, as well as Freddie Hendrix, Bruce Williams, Josh Evans and had a steady gig at the Carlyle Hotel with Loston Harris.
Matt King is a New York area pianist, vocalist, composer and arranger. He was a Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition semi-finalist, and won the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in 2000. King has performed throughout the US and in over 20 countries abroad, with artists as diverse as Blood, Sweat & Tears, Phoebe Snow, and jazz guitarist Chuck Loeb. His latest CD, Kaleidoscope, features 10 of his original compositions and performances by Chris Potter & Rufus Reid.
