Come dance away those Thanksgiving Day calories with some great music at ONCE Somerville (Cuisine En Locale) with The Blue Ribbons, Julie Rhodes, Sugar Blood Jinx and Dead Elect!!
The Blue Ribbons
The Blue Ribbons was formed by singer/songwriter/keyboardist James Rohr. They have been building a base of devoted fans with their original and soulful music. Described as "Ray Charles and Tom Waits on a pirate ship with Sun Ra and Captain Beefheart," they combine "upbeat disillusionment and celebratory fatalism with musicianship" Charan Devereux, Boston Globe.

Julie Rhodes
Every so often a voice comes along that moves you. I mean, sure, there are a lot of really good singers out there and around town. I could rattle off 15 people really easy who have great voices (probably easier than rattling off those whose voices aren't great, there are a fewbut I digress). But there is something that just clicks and gives you chills, the ones where your legs kind of lock up and your shoulders tremble. Julie Rhodes commands a voice like this and she gets me every single time. - Brian Carroll, Red Line Roots.

Sugar Blood Jinx
To grasp the story of Sugar Blood Jinx, you simply need to listen to one of the tracks off their first album. A song called Hardcore Boogie which was written by Eric Waxwood. Three verses; all 100% autobiographical; all true. Life can get pretty hardcore sometimes. From guns accidentally going off at home to being an innocent bystander during an armed robbery; these are the kind of reasons you've got to boogie. Or just turn those real hard blues into something that can raise you up. That's the Sugar Blood Jinx Mantra. Blues with attitude. It's right there in their name, Sugar Blood Jinx. Earlier in his life, just when Eric decided to devote his time learning the style of the Pre-war country blues masters (Charlie Patton, Blind Boy Fuller, Robert Johnson), he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. At the time, a friend bestowed upon him the Blues name 'Sugar Blood', and in the same way the Blues musicians of the past turned they're adversity into a positive, so would Sugar Blood... Let's just say the Jinx part is all about running with the bad luck that life deals you. Sugar Blood Jinx play good-timey hardcore-boogie blues with attitude. So get up or shut up!
