The Artist's Voice: Kia Labeija
The Studio Museum in Harlem and Visual Aids are pleased to commemorate the 26th annual Day With(out) Art with The Artist's Voice: Kia Labeija. This multi-part program will begin with the uptown screening of RADIANT PRESENCE, a digital slideshow of images from the Visual AIDS Artist Registry, the largest database of works by artists with HIV/AIDS. Following the screening will be an artist talk in which Harlem Postcards artist and 2014 Visual AIDS Vanguard Award recipient, Kia Labeija, will be joined by Antwaun Sargent to discuss Labeija's multi-disciplinary art in photography, performance and installation, and explore the intersections of community, politics and fine art.
RADIANT PRESENCE showcases the resilience and vitality of Visual AIDS's Artist Members and their artwork, preserving the radiance of those who have passed while provoking dialogue about the needs and experiences of people living with HIV. RADIANT PRESENCE provokes conversations about HIV criminalization and stigma, access to treatment, the shifting demographics of people living with HIV and the disproportionate effect of the epidemic on communities of color and transwomen.
Thanks to the generous support of Target, Museum admission and public programs are free and open to the public on Sundays. Registration for the event is at capacity. Additional seating and standing room availability will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
