San Jose Youth Symphony's Philharmonic Orchestra Presents Its Season Opener
The San Jose Youth Symphony's Philharmonic Orchestra, under the artistic leadership of Music Director and Conductor Yair Samet, presents its 2015-2016 Season Opener to be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 8:00 pm at the McAfee Performing Arts Center, 20300 Herriman Avenue, Saratoga, CA 95070.
The program will open with the entertaining "A Grand, Grand Festival Overture" by Malcolm Arnold, and conclude with Prokofiev's ever-popular masterpiece, the Ballet Suites from Romeo and Juliet. This concert will also showcase winners from the 2015 Young Artists' Competition, proudly sponsored by the San Jose Symphony Foundation. Three outstanding young soloists will be featured: Joyce Jang, violist, performing Forsyth's Viola Concerto in G minor; Tiffany Wong, harpist, performing Boieldieu's Harp Concerto in C Major; and Kevin Li, pianist, performing Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1. All three soloists are students at local high schools and members of SJYS's Philharmonic Orchestra.
The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) is one of the oldest and finest youth orchestras on the West Coast of the U.S. Founded over six decades ago as part of the former San Jose Symphony, SJYS has a rich tradition of musical performance and education.
The mission of SJYS is to give young people a foundation for life through orchestral music. We create programs that assure young musicians achieve technical proficiency, musical knowledge and an emotional connection to music. We strive to make each performance for the community uplifting, spirited and exciting.
Today, SJYS comprises over 450 member musicians, ranging in age from 8 to 20, and are chosen from over 600 applicants through our annual auditions. The SJYS comprises 10 distinct performing ensembles: two full orchestras; a chamber orchestra; two flute choirs; two string ensembles; concert winds, percussion and harp ensembles.
The Philharmonic Orchestra is its premier ensemble, performing regularly during the season and embarks on biannual international summer concert tours, most recently to Portugal and Spain, as well as in previous tours to other parts of Europe, Asia, and South America.
