Kingdom of Shadows
In his new film, Ruiz takes an unflinching look at the hard choices and destructive consequences of the U.S.- Mexico "drug war," weaving together the stories of a U.S. drug enforcement agent on the border, an activist nun in violence-scarred Monterrey, Mexico and a former Texas smuggler, to reveal the human side of an often misunderstood conflict that has resulted in a growing human-rights crisis that has only recently made international headlines.
The film screens at 6:30, and is followed by a post-screening discussion featuring Bernardo Ruiz, (who also directed the Emmy-nominated Reportero) and J. Jesus Esquivel, Washington correspondent of the Mexican news magazine Proceso, and author of "La DEA en Mexico," and "La CIA, Camarena y Caro Quintero: La Historia Secreta." Moderated by Diana Jean Schemo, founding editor of 100Reporters.
