Counterpoints
Ariose presents counterpoints from the past and present. In the first half of the concert, secular meets sacred with works by Arcadelt and Lassus. In the second half, we feature local composers in different stages of their careers. Santa Cruz-born Robert H. Young (1923-2011) had a long career as a composer and choir director at Baylor University. We sing a number of his lush works for unaccompanied choir. Hyo-shin Na, who arrived in the U.S. in 1983 to study composition and now lives in San Francisco, combines elements of traditional Korean music with contemporary compositional techniques. We perform two works written for Ariose Singers and premiered this spring, both accompanied by piano. Christopher Pratorius is a young California-based composer whose pieces have been performed in New York, Boston, Istanbul, Guatemala, New Haven, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Omaha, Tucson and the Santa Cruz area. We premiere Contraponientes, written for Ariose and featuring a small instrument ensemble along with the choir.
