Michael Reno Harrell in Concert with Keith Little
The Marshall Grange is pleased to present the return of North Carolinian songwriter, singer, storyteller Michael Reno Harrell in concert on Saturday, November 21 beginning at 7 p.m. Local musician extraordinaire Keith Little will join Michael on stage for a special guest appearance.
Michael Reno Harrell is a well-known performer on the east coast, who is returning to the Marshall Grange after a two year absence. Michael has won lots of awards like the featured Teller at the National Storytelling Festival, that's true. And he has appeared at major music and storytelling festivals around the world, like Merlefest, that's true too. But that doesn't begin to describe the magic he brings to a performance in both spoken word and song. Michael's style makes you feel like you're sitting together in the backyard or the porch, the perfect setting for his stories and songs done with a wit and charm rooted deep in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. His subjects are mostly everyday things: the high school boys who got bored being shepherds in the Nativity play (Sledding Shepherds); the story of a waitress in a late night roadside café (Mama's Still in There); the perils of putting in a new woodstove (Talking Woodstove Blues); a guy pan-handling at McDonald's (Say, Did I Mention), a local singer looking for the big time (Mavis Went to Memphis); a water tank that got converted into a roller rink (Roller Rink) to name but just a few. As one person put it after Michael's concert, "His songs and stories are pure Appalachian grit and wit, kind of like your granddaddy's pocket knife: well warn and familiar feeling, but razor sharp and with a point". You can learn more about Michael and hear his stories and songs at www.michaelreno.com.
Keith Little needs no introduction to folks on the Georgetown Divide. We know him as that special kind of guy who goes around the world playing with the likes of the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience and the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band and then comes home and plays with local folk at our community farmer's market. Continuing in that tradition, Keith will be making a special appearance with Michael to do some tunes together, and maybe tell a tale or two about their days in the Tennessee bluegrass scene.
This evening concert is the perfect way to spend an evening in the intimate setting of the Grange enjoying the music of two fine musicians. The Marshall Grange is located at 4940 Marshall Road, in Garden Valley. Driving directions may be found at www.marshallgrange.org.
