Frederic Chen - Concert Pianist
Concert pianist Frederic Chen will perform on Sunday, May 20 at 5 p.m. at GRACE CATHEDRAL as a part of the Cathedral's GREAT SPACES Music & Arts Series. Grace Cathedral is located at 701 SW 8th Avenue in downtown Topeka. Tickets for the concert are available online at www.GreatSpaces.org, at the Cathedral's office during the week or at the door the day of the concert ($10/adults, $5/students, 12 and young free) . Chen will perform two Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti (D minor, K 1, L 366 and K 492, L 14), Robert Schumann's "Fantasiestücke" Opus 12, and "Piano Sonata No. 7 in B-flat Major" Opus 83 by Sergei Prokofiev.

Pianist Frederic Chen has cultivated a versatile career as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. Praised for his expressive musicianship, brilliant virtuosity, and sophisticated interpretations, he has thrilled audiences throughout North American, Europe, and Asia with his wide-ranging repertoire, from Bach to Ligeti, at major concert stages such as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center, Palau de la Musica of Valencia, Spain, and the National Concert Hall, Taiwan. He has performed in numerous renowned music festivals, such as the International Holland Music Sessions, MusicAlp Festival, Sergei Babayan International Piano Academy, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and TCU Cliburn Institute (Piano Texas International Academy & Festival). Recent solo recital engagements include performances at the Ruel Joyce Recital Series at Johnson County Community College, and the Atelier Concert Series at the American Church in Paris, France. Mr. Chen made his concerto debut with the National Taiwan Normal University Orchestra, under the baton of Apo Hsu at Taipei's Novel Hall for Performing Arts in Taiwan.
Mr. Chen has been the recipient of numerous awards. He won First Prize of the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, the Russian Soul Award from the American Protégé Russian Music Piano Festival, the Taiwan National Piano Competition, and the Kansas City Musical Club Scholarship Audition. In addition, he was a laureate of the Taipei International Chopin Piano Competition, the Dorothy MacKenzie Artist Recognition Scholarship Awards Competition of the Mannes International Keyboard Institute, and the Connecticut Young Artist Piano Competition. A native of Taiwan, Frederic Chen began studying the piano at the age of nine. He is a graduate of Oberlin College, Yale School Music, and Imola International Piano academy. Currently, he is a Doctor of Musical Arts Candidate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He has studied with Ann Schein, Peter Frankl, John McIntyre, and Boris Petrushansky. Mr. Chen has also worked with numerous world-renowned performers and pedagogues such as Sergei Babayan, John O'Conor, Lazar Berman, Cyprien Katsaris, and Philippe Entremont in masterclasses.
