Studio Salon: Wardell Milan in Conversation with Alvin Hall & Lauren Haynes
Studio Salon is the Museum's literary society that invites language lovers to participate in an ongoing series of artist talks, book launches and writing workshops inspired by our exhibitions. This special edition of Studio Salon is presented on the occasion of Black: Color, Material, Concept, an exhibition that explores the ways that modern and contemporary artists of African descent consider the possibilities of "black" through their choice of media, their imagery and the ideas they bring towards their work.
In celebrating the publication of exhibiting artist Wardell Milan's first monograph, this program will also celebrate his 10-year history with the Museum. Join us for an intimate book-signing with Milan, followed by a panel discussion where he will be joined by Alvin Hall --an internationally renowned financial educator, television and radio broadcaster, and author who contributed to the monograph --and Lauren Haynes, Associate Curator, Permanent Collection who organized the exhibition. Together, they will explore the evolution of Milan's practice over the course of the past decade, beginning with his inclusion in Frequency in 2005 and moving on to unpack the role the Artist-in-Residence program and subsequent Museum exhibitions have played in his maturation as an artist.
Wardell Milan grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and earned his BFA in photography and painting at the University of Tennessee (2001). He was an artist in residence at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine (2003) before earning his MFA at Yale University (2004). After relocating to New York, Milan made his mark as an important emerging artist, where he exhibited in Frequency (2005) at The Studio Museum in Harlem, Greater New York (2005) at MoMA PS1 and Log Cabin (2005) at Artists Space before presenting in his first show abroad, La Beaute de l'Enfer (2005) at Galerie Rodolphe Janssen in Brussels and his first solo gallery show at Taxter and Spengemann Gallery (2005). During the peak of his debut, respected art critic for the The New York Times, Holland Cotter concluded, "Mr. Milan's work has plenty of finesse, but also feels flexible, on a growth curve an auspicious debut" (NYT, December 16, 2005). With Black Alphabet (2006) at Zacheta National Gallery of Art, a solo show at Sampson Projects in Boston, the two person show Wardell Milan & Kalup Linzy (2007) at Context Gallery and his residency exhibit Midnight's Daydream (2007) at The Studio Museum in Harlem, Milan gained more visibility and support. He was awarded The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award (2007) and installed solo exhibitions at public institutions: Franklin Art Works in Minneapolis (2008) and Clough-Hanson Gallery, Rhodes College, Memphis (2010), while being included in the group show Mixed Signals, The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (2011). He is included in anthologies such as Yourself in the World: Selected Writings and Interviews, by Glenn Ligon (2011, Yale University Press) and Vitamin D2: New Perspectives in Drawing (2013, Phaidon Press), and has received grants from Art Matters (2011) and Foundation for Contemporary Arts (2014). Most recently, Wardell Milan has exhibited selections from ongoing bodies of work on paper and photography such as A Series of Inspiring Women (2012) at Louis B. James Gallery, Kingdom or Exile: Parisian Landscapes (2013) at Savannah College of Art and Design, and (Show Untitled) Parisian Landscapes (2014) at Osmos Address, and The Charming Hour (2015) at David Nolan Gallery, where he is represented in New York.
Alvin Hall is an internationally renowned financial educator, television and radio broadcaster, bestselling author, and regular contributor to magazines, newspapers, and websites. Having hosted highly rated and award-winning series, Your Money or Your Life, Jay-Z: From Brooklyn to the Boardroom and Alvin's Guide to Good Business, Hall has also hosted programs on current events and contemporary art for BBC Radio 4. In the US, he is a regular contributor on personal finance and the economy on NPR's Tell Me More with Michel Martin. Among Hall's bestselling books are: You and Your Money: It's More than Just the Numbers, Your Money or Your Life, What Not to Spend, Getting Started in Mutual Funds 2ndEdition, Getting Started in Stocks 3rd Edition and a children's book titled, Show Me the Money. Hall lives in New York City where he leads acclaimed teaching programs and speaking engagements on investment market strategy for financial services companies, banks, regulatory authorities, information technology vendors and has provided thousands of people with solid grounding in the topics of debt reduction, retirement planning and personal finance management. Alvin Hall is a member of the NYSE Euronext Financial Literacy Advisory Committee and serves on the Acquisitions Committee for the Studio Museum in Harlem.
This program is free with Museum admission, which is a suggested donation of $7 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. To purchase advance tickets, please register through this website. All seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
