Mark Twain and the Laughing River should be one of the most enjoyable evenings of the year as Twain comes to life under the inspired effort of Jim Post. Mark Twain said that his childhood was "the wellspring of [his] clearest inspiration." Post took Twain at his word and wrote this delightful family show, joyously recalling Hannibal, a boy's paradise with a buckskin spirit of adventure. Prepare for an evening of Mark Twain wit and wisdom plus the brilliant, jubilant music of Jim Post; songs that are not period songs but originals that complement the storyline. Besides, Twain played guitar, banjo and piano and also loved to sing.
Some may remember Post from his pop music and folksinger days of the 1970s. That success and experience clearly gave him the songwriting and performance foundation which is evident today in this original effort. Post, as the Chicago Tribune points out, "is a respected performer who, over the years, has brought pieces like 'Mark Twain and the Laughing River' to urbanites who can only dream of being able to wander down to the mighty Mississippi" without spending hours traveling just to get there. If Jim Post's Twain performance sounds vaguely familiar the concept isn't entirely new. The great Hal Holbrook did his one-man Twain show for more than 40 years. Jim Post offers a very different and much lighter show which is dominated as much by the original music as it is by Twain. Mark Twain as presented by Post may be unusual, but the character is proudly his own, and his onstage warmth and singing come shining through.
"Post's depiction of Mark Twain is nothing less than brilliant. . . ." -- Smithsonian Institution
"The show is worth it for the music alone!" -- Roy Leonard
"His songs and monologues, whether serious or witty, feel as natural to the ears as everyday conversation. Rousing...an ideal family show." -- Chicago Sun Times
The music from "Mark Twain and the Laughing River" won the American Library Award for 1997. Jim's music has been described as the music Stephen Foster might have written had he been a playwright. More info at: http://jimpost.com
