Project Open Box! POST: BALLET & COMMITMENT
We invite you to Project: Open Box. Project Open Box is a fiscally sponsored endeavor created & directed by A-K Arts Collective. This monthly event is hosted at Little Boxes Theater, an underground space dedicated to support and keep Bay Area arts alive and thriving.
Post: Ballet presents 'Boo! Hiss! I'm tired of winter.' This is a work for two dancers set to a score by Brooklyn-based composer Jacob Cooper. Featuring Post dance artists Gabriel Mata and Vanessa Thiessen, this intimate duet by choreographer Robert Dekkers is based on a single moment in time that is expanded and explored in detail by the artists. Named "25 To Watch" by DANCE Magazine and hailed as a "mad genius" by the Huffington Post, Robert Dekkers is passionate about connecting with exceptional artists to create entirely original performance experiences for the community. The imaginative and unpredictable results sparked SF Chronicle's David Wiegand to state: "This is a company that not only lives dangerously it thrives on it." http://www.postballet.org
Commitment is a series of focused on focus. Beneath a society of convenience, fetish and distraction, there is humanity, waiting. Commitment endeavors to welcome this natural being out from our core, which lives behind self-destructive behavior. As a performance, Commitment offers support for its audience through the discomfort of this emotional unveiling. By combining physical dance vocabulary, improvisational scores and character study, a universally personal story is shared. Ideally, Commitment provides a landscape to explore and illuminate the confusion of suffering within each person. You invited to flow any time or story evoked for you. Please commit. Performance created by resident artist Courtney Courtney accompanied by performers Sierra Kellogg & Andrew Abel. Music composes by Huli Curry. Photography exhibit by Alex Goodwin.
Long Story: Courtney Courtney is a classically-trained dance artist, who tinkers with her boundaries and enjoys sharing the mystery of that process. She chose to attend the BFA program with Lines Ballet through Dominican University and graduated in 2012. Now, after stumbling through post-college years of artistic and personal confusion, Courtney Courtney is basking in the glory of working with Bay Area performance groups including Bad Unkl Sista, Dance and a Half, and her own series of creations called COMMITMENT.
