Beyond The Grimm
Every child should have an opportunity to believe in fairytales. Unfortunately, for many children "happily never after" is easier to believe. Reveries In Motion Dance Company wants to help brighten the outlook for children battling harsh or particularly challenging realities. So, Reveries In Motion is partnering with Center on Halsted to present "Beyond the Grimm", a dance concert benefitting the Center's youth programs, which offer resources for children who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or straight allies (LGBTQA).
"We're so excited to share a collection of beautifully inspired dance pieces, conceptually based on Grimm fairytales," said Heather Liparota, founder and artistic director of Reveries In Motion. "Many of us remember how much we enjoyed these stories as children and even as adults and we wish all children could be fortunate enough to get lost in childhood imagination as freely as we have."
Reveries In Motion's choreographers have stretched beyond simply creating dances about fairytales. They've each developed distinctive interpretations generally or specifically based on Grimm fairytales. "You won't see characters dancing on stage," Liparota said. "Each person will see something different, and connect in a unique way. The show is not targeted to children or adults it's for everyone."
When Center on Halsted learned about Reveries In Motion's inspiration for this show, a new partnership was born. The Center, located in Lakeview, is dedicated to strengthening Chicago's LGBTQA community. It serves more than 300 young people through on-site programs and more than 1,600 youth through citywide programs. The performance will feature a diverse cast of talented dancers, also including live percussion and spoken word. Reveries In Motion was founded on the premise of dance activism dancing for causes. In previous years, the company performed to raise money for the Invisible Children Organization, Chicago Children's Charities and most recently, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
