Juris Winery at Bar Tartine
On Monday April 30, Bar Tartine is excited to present an evening with Axel and Herta Stieglmar of Juris Winery. Axel and Herta will present a lineup of Pinot Noir and Saint Laurent of various vintages (most not available in America!) and talk about their approach to winemaking in the Burgenland region of Austria. Small bites will be served by Nick Balla and Cortney Burns of Bar Tartine.
We will explore St. Laurent's Burgundian ancestry through the lens of over 4 decades of producing Pinot Noir by the Juris winery. Axel's father Georg was among the 1st in Austria to try malolactic fermentation, barrique, and focus on a single varietal bottling. Juris has continued to be a benchmark for these grapes in Austria.
The Juris winery now has vineyards across 15 hectares in Gols at the edge of the Parndorf plateau to the Seewinkel. 80% of the acreage in Gols is currently planted with red wine grapes, primarily St. Laurent, Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufränkisch. The other 20 % is covered with white wine grapes, led by Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Muskat-Ottonel.
Particular attention is placed on protecting the natural resources of a vineyard, which requires intensive foliage work and meaningful thinning out at the right time. Grapes, must and wine are mainly moved by gravity at the JURIS Winery. The processing material on four levels falls, slips or flows by itself onto the next level. The wines in the cellar are pressed again at high pressure using a special pressure system, which creates elegant and harmonious red wines with a silky tannin structure.
