Despite a series of misfortunes, he became the most prolific and famous Yiddish writer of all time200,000 people attended his funeral. Sholom Aleichem was the original genius behind Fiddler on the Roof, some of which was adapted word-for-word from his story about Tevye, the Dairy Man.
