Phoenix Quartet presents The End of Time, Deconstructed
This season marks the launch of the Messiaen + project, a large-scale commission of several composers from NYC and beyond to write brief interpretations of one of the eight movements of Messiaen's masterpiece.
Messiaen's Quartet consists of eight relatively short movements that act as little vignettes: some of the movements were previously separate pieces before Messiaen repurposed them for the Quartet, specifically the solo movements of the clarinet, cello, and violin. Wanting to echo that concept, Phoenix will perform the vignettes written by the new composers as a multi-movement unit.
For "The End of Time, Deconstructed," Messiaen's movements will be heard interspersed with some new movements, offering, in a way, immediate musical commentary from the commissioned composers on Messiaen's masterpiece.
