K A T E R O B A R D S ----------------------------------------------------- Ain't That Rich
Kate has always heard the adages about money. It doesn't buy happiness. It can't replace friendship, love or family. Growing up, she heard a few other adages about money too. "You can marry more in a minute than you can make in a lifetime." Having lived most her life with not too much dough, she's now having a blast being married to a "rich" man. She can't call him that though. His family thinks it's not a nice thing to say. While she loves her husband and her life, she's forced to look again at the haves and have-nots and the benefits of cultural capital all while asking herself the question, "am I a gold digger?"
T H A O P. N G U Y E N ----------------------------------------------------- "Don't Call Me Dao"
Thao's name is Thao. Not Dao. So stop calling her Dao. When she introduces herself as Thao, people often correct her and say her name is Dao. (Okay, not people. White people. Yes, only White people.) She's on a mission to figure out why White people reeeeeally want to call her Dao.
G I N O R O S E ----------------------------------------------------- "Dance of the Spider: Rising From the Dread"
When Gene Thomas, sixth grader at St. Bartholomew's Grade School, reaches into his lunch bag he doesn't pull out a sandwich. He pulls out a piece of pink paper-a love note from his melancholy mother. Joe Pellegrino, an unruly classmate sees the piece of pink paper. And the look of horror on Gene's face. Bad enough that Gene's last name already makes him feel less than a real Italian. Here's one more unsettling reminder that he's not the tough Italian kid he'd like to be. Of course, he's does have the family depression: a secret legacy that's been passed down from generation to generation. Southern Italian depression even has its own theme song, featuring a large, hairy spider. What's a poor Italian boy to do?
M A R I A G R A Z I A A F F I N I T O ----------------------------------------------------- "Eating Pasta off the Floor"
Maria hopes a trip to her mom's hometown in Italy will shed some light on their volatile relationship. Maybe singing arias at full voice in the supermarket and offering to sell your daughter are just quaint Old World traditions. But even old friends in Italy are astonished when mom starts flinging pasta and bad poetry.
