Steely Dan: Rare Performances (1972-1992)
Join Rock legends Live! host Bill Shelley for a spectacular evening exploring the work of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's legendary band Steely Dan
Steely Dan is one of the most subversive, mysterious and iconoclastic groups in rock history. The group's slick mix of jazz, rock and pop defined the sound of 70s FM radio. It even did the title song for the ill-fated movie FM. Yet, albums such as Aja and Gaucho sold well and the group's comeback album Two Against Nature, from 1980, snagged the Grammy as album of the year. The group is the brainchild of the enigmatic vocalist and keyboard player Donald Fagen and multi-instrumentalist and producer Walter Becker. Although the group's early albums consisted of a somewhat static lineup, for the most part Becker and Fagen handpick the cream of studio and jazz musicians to fill out the musical roles of their high-concept recording projects. The group did perform live early in its career and nowadays performs often, but for the bulk of its career it has concentrated on meticulously and painstakingly perfecting its albums in the studio. Little footage is available of the group's 70s watershed years. In an evening of truly amazing music clips, Bill Shelley presents performances of the group from television specials and live performances. Spanning the years 1972 through 1992, this special evening of music will feature such songs as "Do It Again," "Reelin' in the Years," "My Old School," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and the title track of Pretzel Logic. There will also be special guests. -Steve Matteo (approx. 100 min)
